Assemblymember Cahill: Governor’s 2010 – 2011 Budget Proposal Will be Improved and Passed Early
January 19, 2010

From Assemblymember Kevin A. Cahill:

“Governor David Paterson put together a 2010 – 2011 budget that addresses the fiscal reality we are in, but places far too much burden on schools, colleges, local governments and the not-for-profit agencies on which we so greatly depend. As proposed, the Governor’s budget also adds unacceptable new fees and taxes. Our clear objective is to take a stand by turning away any budget shortcomings that will only further overload New York’s hard-working taxpayers.

“As an advocate for education, and to reduce the local property tax burden, I oppose the Governor’s proposed cuts of $1.1 billion in state school aid which amounts to a 5% decrease in overall funding. The education of our children is paramount and no district should be forced to endure cuts in state aid unless they are matched with equal amount of savings and credits. Maintaining state education funding helps everyone, from pre-schoolers just entering the system to college students facing rising tuition costs, and avoids adding further economic stress on beleaguered property tax payers.

“As we work to improve on the Governor’s proposed budget, my Legislative colleagues and I will fight hard to hold the line on taxes, increase government efficiency through the consolidation of services, and to protect education aid to the fullest extent possible. The State budget must also maintain the integrity of our health care delivery system while guarding against regressive taxes that unfairly affect working families. I will continue to sponsor and support legislation to spur economic recovery, such as the proven strategy of enabling a new energy economy.

“I agree with the Governor that the age of accountability is long overdue. In the coming weeks I will be studying the Governor’s proposal and pledge to work diligently toward the early passage of a responsible budget to best serve the needs of the people of Ulster and Dutchess Counties and indeed all New Yorkers.”
