Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D- Ulster, Dutchess) released the following statement regarding Governor Paterson’s latest MTA tax proposal:
“While the MTA is important to our state’s overall economy, the continuation of any payroll tax for employers within northern Dutchess County, and Rhinebeck in particular, keeps the region on the wrong track. These communities receive no MTA services whatsoever and given the County’s miniscule representation on the Board that is a situation that is not likely change anytime soon. Forcing them to pay a tax that provides absolutely no benefit to the residents of this area is wrong and must be stopped altogether.
In this time of fiscal crisis, money funneled to the MTA from our school districts, hospitals, not for profits and businesses has a chilling effect on the workforce and the quality of education and health care provided to the residents of our region. I opposed this unfair tax from the beginning and I will continue to fight an equitable solution for northern Dutchess communities.”
