Second Parks Closure List Surfaces

Albany – Assemblymember Kevin Cahill issued the following statement regarding issuance of a second round of parks and historic sites targeted for closure:

“After viewing the most recent additions to the list of parks and historic sites targeted for closure, I am outraged that the administration is continuing to play politics with institutions so integral to our regional character and economy. New Yorkers depend on these places for our educational and recreational fulfillment, and these sites provide a sense of connection and pride in our communities.

To even consider shutting down the historic Senate House is an insult to our heritage. Many of my colleagues have already expressed disbelief that the closing of the building that memorialized the beginning of New York State would be included on such a list.

This proposal is a non starter. The very act of holding the Environmental Protection Fund hostage is not only bad politics, it diminishes confidence people have in it as a dedicated fund for environmental protection and conservation.

No one has ever balanced a budget by closing a park. I stand firm in my opposition to these proposals and will continue to fight to keep these sites open.”
