Census Participation Key to Our Region’s Future
Thousands of temporary census jobs available for qualified New Yorkers
March 15, 2010

Kingston – Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D-Ulster, Dutchess) is working to remind our area that April 1st is Census Day and that the Census is hiring part-time workers to help in the effort. The data is used to determine federal funding and government representation. An accurate headcount ensures that the region’s needs and interests are heard in Albany and Washington D.C.

“Everyone should participate in the census; it’s vital to our region’s future. The results of the tally will determine our share of more than $400 billion in federal funds each year – money we depend on for schools, hospitals, roadways, public safety and more,” said Assemblymember Cahill. “Without doing our part by filling out the census forms, we risk missing out on critical funding for health care, education and job-training.”

The short, 10-question form – which will show up in your mailbox this month – must be postmarked and mailed by the April 1st deadline. Return postage is paid, so it is free and easy to participate. Residents who fail to respond can expect a call or visit from a census-taker.

The U.S. Census Bureau will also be hiring as many as 750,000 temporary workers by May to help with the 2010 Census. Job responsibilities include locating households and conducting brief interviews with residents, typically those who fail to send in their census questionnaires by the April 1st deadline.

“With good pay, flexible hours and paid training, the jobs are well suited for those looking for part-time work, those between jobs, or anyone who wants to earn extra money while lending an invaluable helping hand – all without leaving their community,” said Assemblymember Cahill.

Census-taker positions are open to U.S. citizens age 18 and over, and most require a valid driver license and use of a vehicle. There are two offices in the Hudson Valley that are hiring, one in Pawling (845) 878-8260 and one in Newburgh (845) 476-3050. Those interested can also call toll-free line 1-866-861-2010, or visit http://2010.census.gov/2010censusjobs/. In addition to a photo ID, applicants must bring either a valid passport or birth certificate to the test site.

The Census Bureau adheres to strict privacy policies. Federal law (Title 13, U.S. Code) prohibits the Census Bureau from sharing personal information with anyone, be it the Internal Revenue Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services or any other government agency.
