New Paltz – Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D- Ulster, Dutchess) joined Interim President Donald Christian, staff members, and the student body at the State University of New York at New Paltz to celebrate the grand opening of the new addition of the Atrium to the Student Union Building. The 15,000 square-foot extension features new student lounge areas, dining venues, and a rejuvenated bookstore.
“The key to reestablishing the vibrancy of New York’s economy can be found in the halls of our public institutions of higher learning” Assemblymember Cahill said. “Over the past decade, I have secured over $100 million in state funds to modernize the campus at SUNY New Paltz which will ultimately increase economic growth for the greater New Paltz region.”
Some projects at SUNY New Paltz that Cahill secured funding for include the new Science Building, the renovation of Old Main and the Sojourner Truth Library, the multi-million dollar athletic facility, and $10 million for the revitalization of the Student Union Building.
The State University has been a long-time economic generator for the region, providing a considerable number of jobs and fiscal support for area businesses. A 2007 study found that SUNY New Paltz was responsible for contributing $274 million to the local economy, with $83 million coming directly from the students.
“The grand opening of the Atrium at SUNY New Paltz augments the value of this institution as one of New York’s most effective engines of opportunity and economic growth,” said Cahill. “As a staunch advocate for SUNY, I am committed to working to enhance the quality and affordability of our public universities which will ultimately lead to greater prosperity for all New Yorkers.”
