Cahill Statement On Increasing Sales Tax In Ulster County
June 23, 2011
Albany - Throughout my time as a public official, I have time and again been opposed to increasing local sales taxes as a means of providing municipalities with an additional source of revenue. Recent studies have indicated that, on average, middle and lower income families contribute a greater share of their earnings to sales and local taxes than wealthy households. Our reliance on regressive taxes, specifically the sales and real property tax, only continue to widen the socio-economic gap between New York’s citizens, placing unnecessary hardship on our most vulnerable population during tough financial times.
Our working class families are bearing the brunt of the economic downturn, and to increase this tax on Ulster County residents is irresponsible and uncalled for, which is why I voted against this legislation.
