Assemblymember Cahill’s Statement On The Regional Economic Development Council Awards
December 8, 2011

(Kingston, NY) Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D- Ulster, Dutchess) released the following statement regarding today’s announcement of the Regional Economic Development award winners:

“For too long, the Mid-Hudson Valley has been overlooked as a site for economic growth and development. The distinctive characteristics of the region, particularly Ulster County, set it apart from the rest of the state, and present unique challenges and opportunities.

“The Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development Council put together a viable plan that can help the area reach its true potential. The awards are an impressive mix of public, private and not-for-profit ventures. The projects will help to improve our quality of life and create new opportunities for growth.

“Furthermore, these announcements represent investments in our future. In particular, helping Ceres Technologies, Inc advance thin film solar technology is reminiscent of a game-changing investment Governor Mario Cuomo authorized almost 20 years ago in a small Highland firm that ushered in the era of Plasma technology and flat screen televisions. That expenditure of less than one million dollars helped a company named Plasmaco to become the industry leader in plasma screens. Though Plasmaco has discontinued operations after several more years of research and development, to this day, companies in our state are still reaping the dividends as components of every display made worldwide originate here in New York. Our key to success in solar lies in staying ahead of the research and development curve. Recognizing the potential of thin film technology shows the kind of foresight Governor Mario Cuomo demonstrated nearly two decades ago. I have been working to make Ulster County a center for energy innovation, particularly when it comes to solar power, and I am pleased to see the State shares this commitment.

“Additionally, the emphasis on housing and community renewal will help to make Ulster County an even more attractive place to live, and encourage more businesses to locate in our area. The investment in water treatment and drainage will provide much needed relief to municipalities. Modernizing our infrastructure and creating more affordable housing will make our region an ideal location for new businesses.

“The awards are a step in the right direction. These resources will contribute to the foundation needed to rebuild our economy, give local businesses the ability to thrive in a competitive global market, and encourage new development. I will continue to work to bring more state investment to the region.”
