Albany – Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D-Ulster, Dutchess) released the following statement:
“Tonight the State Legislature had the opportunity to begin to restore public faith in our electoral system. The simple act of foregoing the opportunity, for what may be the last time the Assembly and the Senate, to choose their own district lines. Instead, many chose to perpetuate the kind of gerrymandering that has done nothing less than disenfranchise the voters of New York.
“I did not join the disingenuous chorus of many members of the State Senate and my own house who pledged, then broke their promise for an independent redistricting panel, still the people of our state deserved that panel. Though small consolation, the strong vote in both houses in support of putting the question before the voters might serve to assure that future after all.”
