Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D – Ulster / Dutchess) released the following statement on Governor Cuomo’s appointment of Justice Karen Peters to serve as Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court for the Third Judicial Department:

“I applaud Governor Cuomo’s decision to appoint Justice Karen Peters to the important and influential position of Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. Justice Peters has had a long and illustrious career in the judiciary and New Yorkers will only benefit from the experience and expertise she will bring to this new role.

“From her beginnings as a noted criminal defense attorney in the Hudson Valley, to her strong advocacy and leadership on substance and alcohol abuse issues, onto her decades of distinguished judicial service as Ulster County Family Court Judge, Third Judicial District Supreme Court Justice and current role on the Appellate Division. Justice Peters’ steady rise has been an inspiration to generations of lawyers and jurists.

Because of my long association with Justice Peters, going back to her days of activism, her elevation to the this prestigious position is particularly gratifying. On behalf of the people of the 101st Assembly District, I congratulate Justice Karen Peters and thank Governor Cuomo for this appointment.
