(Albany, NY) Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D – Ulster, Dutchess), Chair of the Assembly Energy Committee, released the following statement on the transmission modernization plan developed by New York Trans Co, a partnership made up of all of New York’s major public and private utilities:
“The State has more than enough power to meet our electricity needs. One of the biggest problems of the deregulated energy market has been the failure to take on the transmission bottlenecks that existed for decades, costing New Yorkers billions in unnecessary charges.
“The coordinated plan put forward today by our private and public utilities will immediately help create and sustain thousands of jobs across the state and insulate New York from the inevitable rise of natural gas prices and the growing demand for electricity as our economy continues to improve.
“The proposed projects will make better use of New York’s resources by opening up new markets to struggling upstate generators, which are critical to many communities that rely on them for property taxes and good paying jobs. This initiative also establishes the framework for a future without Indian Point. It all comes down to incorporating New York TransCo’s efforts into the State Energy Plan and putting it in motion.
“Addressing these challenges represents one of the most effective ways to lower consumer costs, improve air quality and strengthen New York’s energy security. I look forward to coordinating with the coalition to move forward with a range of solutions designed to modernize our aging infrastructure and finally develop a 21st century system that meets the needs of all New Yorkers.”
