Kingston Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D Ulster, Dutchess) has announced that funding has been made available for the Annual Cooling Initiative directed by New York State Homes and Community Renewal. The program will help low income residents of Ulster and Dutchess Counties who may be at risk of a medical emergency during the hot summer months.
New York has already experienced a number of heat waves, which can pose a threat to senior citizens, young children and individuals with serious health issues, said Assemblymember Cahill. I am encouraging all who may benefit from this program to apply to ensure the health and safety of your family during these hot summer months.
Grants will be made available through $3 million that was set aside through the federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Eligibility is determined by LIHEAP guidelines, a household member with a diagnosis of a chronic or acute medical condition which is aggravated by extreme heat and written documentation provided by a doctor stating the medical necessity of air conditioning to prevent a heat related emergency. More information can be found here: https://www.mybenefits.ny.gov/.
An air conditioner can truly be a live saver for many residents of our community, said Assemblymember Cahill. I hope all eligible households will take advantage of this program.
Local agencies will be accepting applications, determining availability and overseeing the installation of the air conditioning units. Residents of Dutchess County should contact the Dutchess County Community Action Agency at (845) 452-5104 ext. 130 and those who live in Ulster County should call the Ulster Community Action Committee at (845) 338-8750.
