Kingston, New York – Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D – Ulster, Dutchess) spoke at a ceremony today celebrating the grand opening of the Father Edmund Burke Community Center on Adams Street in Kingston which will house Agri-Business Child Development, Catholic Charities, and the Catholic Youth Organization of Ulster County. In 2008, Assemblymember Cahill advocated for and won $2.15 million in funding for the development of this project though the New York State Budget.
“In December 2010 when a fire destroyed the nearly completed renovations on this building, everyone involved was deeply saddened but hope was not lost. Through hard work and combined efforts, we have made the dream of opening a facility of this kind into a reality. At a time when parents and families have been pushed to the limit to make ends meet, it’s crucial that people can find help where and when they need it. I applaud all of those who believed, and continue to believe, that this building and its new mission are built on the most solid of foundations," said Cahill.
The building, previously the Saint Peters Elementary School, is being named after Father Edmund Burke, the former Priest of Saint Mary’s in Kingston. The facility offers child care and development services, a youth recreation center, and houses a food pantry. For decades ABCD has provided child care, social services and nutrition to children of eligible families employed in the agricultural industry. The project will also make facilities available for the Ulster County C.Y.O. Basketball League and provide offices for the Archdiocese of New York.
“This center is the result of true collaboration. Assemblymember Cahill, ABCD and Catholic Charities shared a vision for enhanced services in this community and the surrounding area. We are thrilled to celebrate the realization of that vision,” said Maggie Evans, ABCD Executive Director.
Where there’s a will, there’s a way. When we have faith and work toward the good of our fellow man, anything can be accomplished. This center is proof. I am thankful Assemblyman Cahill was willing to listen to an idea and have the fortitude to see it through,” said Patricia Clausi, St. Mary's Church Parish Assistant.
“The benefits of this renovation are three fold. A previously abandoned building is now being put to good use, local jobs have been created and families in need will be able to better access the kinds of services required to help them get back on their feet. I’m proud to have advocated during the budget process for this important project and delighted to see it come to fruition,” said Cahill.
