Kingston, NY – Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D – Ulster, Dutchess) released the following statement on legislation to extend the additional one percent sales and compensating use tax in Ulster County:
“Throughout my tenure in the Legislature, I have consistently voted against any measure that creates an additional sales tax. I was willing to put aside my opposition and negotiate sensible
amendments to the proposal with the Ulster County Executive. However, the Executive refused to entertain discussions on the subject and to the best of my knowledge, the County Legislature was not willing to consider my proposed amendments.
“As I stated at a press conference earlier today, I am not interested in participating in name calling or other tactics that distract from the real issues. I call upon my colleagues in public service to stick to the facts, not to act and speak on information they either know to be false or that they don't know about at all. The public deserves better.
“As I always have, I stand ready to arrive at equitable solutions with appropriate representatives of the County in a civil manner to bring this issue to a resolution. While it may grab them a headline, the scare tactics, blame shifting and name calling engaged in by some are not what Ulster County residents deserve. My focus remains on fairness and accountability for the taxpayers.”
