Albany, New York – Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D – Ulster, Dutchess) announced today that one of his bills was recently signed into law. Assembly bill A.7419 establishes requirements for the certification and continuing education of surgical technologists working in health care facilities. These professions play a vital role in the operating room by sterilizing instruments, assisting doctors and ensuring safety.
“These individuals are directly responsible for a patient’s well-being. As such, continued training is crucial for these professionals to be up to date on advancing medical technology and procedures,” said Assemblymember Cahill. “This legislation is an important way to increase patient safety, save our already struggling hospitals from fines and conserve tax payer dollars.”
Beth Applegate-Debo, President of the New York Association of Surgical Technologists states, “Every day in New York, thousands of surgeries are being performed. Perhaps, you or a loved one has had surgery recently. Surgical procedures are complicated, and require extensive use of highly technical equipment. The proper education of all team members is vital to the successful outcome of all surgical patients. Patients assume everyone in the operating room is credentialed. This law makes patients safer.”
