Assemblyman Marc Butler (R,C,I-Newport) participated in the recent conference, “Governing in the Global Age,” held at the Elliot School of International Affairs at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
The two-day conference focused on formulating economic development strategies for states in the context of the emerging global economy. Butler joined the New York delegation as the ranking Minority member of the Assembly Economic Development Committee.
“Taken separately, New York State’s economy would be among the largest in the world. Conversely, world events have an impact on New York’s economy,” said Butler. “To remain competitive, we must begin preparing now to deal with rapidly developing trends in the world’s economy.”
According to Butler, New York’s initiative in high-tech development is one area that is already paying dividends for state residents.
“New York’s entrepreneurial spirit has been a driving force in our development, and we must rely on that spirit to help us prepare for what lies ahead,” Butler said. “Our delegation returned from this conference with a number of ideas that can be extremely helpful to us as we formulate state policy.”
Along with state and local legislators from several states, conference participants included representatives in the fields of education, economic development and trade groups, and professionals from the areas of economics and trade.
