Assemblyman Marc Butler (R,C-Newport) says New Yorkers are safer today after he helped pass tough new laws punishing criminals who use illegal guns to harm police personnel, state residents and visitors to New York. Gov. George Pataki, the State Senate, and Assembly all were able to come to an agreement today
“Police officers put their lives on the line every day,” said Butler. “For them to be able to do their jobs, they need to know that guns aren’t going to be trading hands illegally on the streets. This legislation is going to curb violence.”
The legislation proposed by Gov. George Pataki dramatically increases penalties for the sale, possession and use of illegal firearms, and establishes stiffer penalties for individuals who attack police officers and other public safety personnel. Assemblyman Butler assures firearm enthusiasts, collectors and residents that the legislation affects only the people who deal in and use illegal weapons.
“By imposing more stringent penalties on those who buy or sell firearms illegally, we are going to see the state a much safer place,” concluded Butler. “Despite attempts to derail this legislation, the Assembly has come together today and put politics aside to help protect lives.”
