Lotto Scholarship Makes Higher Education More Affordable
March 1, 2006

Rising costs is an issue we must deal with daily in today’s society. Everything from home heating fuel to out of control Medicare expenses is draining the pockets of many hard-working New Yorkers. However, some things in life, like a good education, should not be out of reach simply because of the cost.

The New York State Lottery serves a greater purpose than just fulfilling dreams of becoming wealthy. It also provides much needed scholarships to students in need. The lottery provides four-year scholarships to one graduating senior from each participating public and private high school in the state.

With college costs, every little bit helps. Each scholarship winner is paid $4,000 over four years. Eligible students must expect to graduate in June 2006, maintain a cumulative B average, and exhibit leadership skills.

Not only does the award help offset the cost of continuing an education, it also challenges students to maintain a high level of excellence. Scholarship winners must maintain a cumulative B average and earn a Bachelors degree within 5 years of enrollment.

Interested students are encouraged to talk to their school administrators to apply. Applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, March 10, 2006 and mailed to the New York Lottery LOT Scholarship, One Broadway Center, P.O. Box 7540, Schenectady, NY 12301.

I urge all graduating high school seniors to consider this scholarship program. It can help ease the financial burden of pursuing a higher education and work towards a better tomorrow.
