Canal Trails Mean More Traffic For Local Business
May 16, 2006

New York is home to some of the most naturally beautiful resources in America – from the Adirondack Mountains to the Finger Lakes. But one of the most unique attractions for our residents and visitors is our beloved Erie Canal, a somewhat-forgotten resource that has the potential to boost business for many vendors along its statewide route.

The Erie Canal is a history-rich part of our region and state. It served its purpose in the past in developing our economy; it has a chance to do the same once more. The state Canal Corporation is expanding the Canalway Trail system and attracting bicyclists to make their way through the many localities along the canal. This provides communities with opportunities to reap the benefits of this unique part of the tourism industry.

Studies consistently show that bicycle and other outdoor tourists come from high-income households, typically spend between $100 and $300 per day, and will travel significant distances to regions offering a good mix of cycling, attractions, and services. Coupled with our serene natural beauty, upstate New York would be a wonderful vacation spot for individuals visiting our extensive trail system.

I’m proud to join the Canal Corporation in urging the promotion of bicycle tourism along our canal trails. Free forums are being held in villages and cities along the canal to help local municipalities and businesses understand what’s needed to attract bicycle tourists. It will be my duty to ensure a forum is held in or near my Assembly district so community leaders and business owners can take advantage of these sessions.

Tourism plays a huge role in the success of our regional economy, and it’s opportunities like this we cannot afford to pass up. As your legislator, I strive to do everything possible to help new businesses, create jobs and provide opportunities.

Be sure to contact me at my Herkimer (315) 866-1632 or Johnstown (518) 762-6486 offices to learn more about this burgeoning success story.
