Energy Saving Tips For This Summer
July 7, 2006

Summer is here, and it is time to enjoy the number of outdoor activities the warm weather of the season has to offer. However, with the hot weather comes the increasing demand for electricity. This high demand affects all of us by impacting the necessities and resources we depend on in the summer months.

Even small efforts made by individuals to reduce the amount of electricity they use every day make a big difference in energy conservation. It is especially important that we all use electricity wisely to conserve the limited energy we have during a heat wave and on those intensely hot summer days.

To help manage the high cost of your energy bills, and reduce how much energy is being used, I encourage all residents to follow these simple, yet useful tips.

  • Use electric ceiling fans to stay cool (fans use much less energy than air conditioners)
  • Turn off your air conditioner when you leave your home
  • Try to use your major appliances (dishwasher, washer, dryer, etc.) early or late in the day
  • Give your air conditioner a break by using a programmable thermostat
  • Close blinds and curtains during the day to keep the sunlight out
  • Shop for an alternative energy supplier that is energy efficient

Be sure to also safeguard electrical appliances from power surges by using surge protectors. If you experience a power outage, make sure you disconnect your electrical appliances and turn off other appliances that were on to avoid blowing fuses when the power comes back.
