Assemblyman Marc Butler (R,C,I-Newport) today called on the Assembly Majority to allow a vote on Governor Spitzer’s unchecked reckless policy change that will allow the DMV to issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.
Butler was joined by other members of the Assembly Minority Conference before an anticipated special session of the Assembly.
“My office has been flooded with calls, e-mails and letters from constituents saying how enraged they are with Governor Spitzer’s illegal and reckless policy change,” said Assemblyman Butler.
“As a member of the Legislature, we have a duty of providing checks and balances in government. We have an obligation to the people of New York state to debate the issues surrounding the implementation of a plan like the one the governor is proposing,” said Butler.
Butler and his Minority colleagues anticipate proposing a hostile amendment blocking Governor Spitzer's plan that will require all applicants for a driver's license submit proof of fitness, age, photos, proof of identity, Social Security number or proof of ineligibility to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Assemblyman Butler also reiterated his call for passing the County Clerks Protection Act. This initiative shields county taxpayers from incurring the costs associated with a frivolous lawsuit brought by Governor Spitzer and also prevents him from removing county clerks for their refusal to carry out his illegal driver’s license policy change.
“I stand firm in my opposition to the plan. Governor Spitzer’s unlawful proposal to give driver’s licenses to illegal aliens would make New York less safe and less secure,” concluded Butler.
