Thruway Toll Hikes Further Burden Upstate Economy
April 25, 2008
"In a time when traveling and commuting has already become a huge burden on New Yorkers, especially with escalating gas prices, the Thruway Authority has decided to increase fees instead of seeking an internal solution through cost-cutting measures. The upstate economy is already struggling and we simply cannot afford to saddle drivers with another fee. My Assembly Minority colleagues and I have presented legislation that would have prevented this increase. However, while Speaker Silver and his colleagues on the other side of the aisle have talked about stopping the increase, they have refused to consider this legislation.
We in the legislature were elected to represent the people in our districts and know best about the issues affecting residents and businesses. It is unfair that decisions such as this toll hike are left in the hands of unelected officials. We must act to stop this toll hike. We cannot continue to add taxes and fees, especially in a time of such economic instability."
