As a public service, my district offices in Herkimer and Johnstown have been providing constituents with copies of their 2008 tax forms. It has come to my attention that some have mistakenly received 2007 tax filing forms instead of 2008 forms. If you have already picked up your forms, make sure the forms are for the 2008 tax year.
In the event that you returned an incorrect form, you will receive a letter notifying you of the error and will receive instructions on how to proceed. Taxpayers who filed correctly will not receive a letter.
The Department of Taxation and Finance has announced that taxpayers who in the past have received forms and instructions for filing their taxes by mail, will instead be receiving post cards indicating that they will no longer be receiving forms in the mail. The process of mailing forms and instructions to taxpayers costs New York state almost $1 million per year and will help the state save much-needed funds during the current fiscal crisis. Taxpayers will be able to get the same information that they would have received by mail by visiting their local libraries, logging on to the Department’s Web site at www.nystax.gov, by calling (518) 457-5149 or by stopping by either of my district offices.
Tax season is always a stressful time of year and the last thing you need is to be left guessing where to pick up your tax forms. This is why I am reminding my constituents that the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has implemented this important change to the tax filing process, which will be in effect for the 2009 filing season.
