As the pumpkins start appearing on doorsteps and the nights become cooler, we are reminded that fall is upon us. Not only does October mark the unofficial beginning of fall, but it is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the spirit of trying to spread breast cancer awareness, I have recently joined with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in their October breast cancer awareness campaign in order to urge women to get mammograms.
This is a significant time to remind women to get mammograms. A mammogram is a safe, low-dose x-ray exam of the breasts that looks for abnormal changes. The x-ray allows doctors to take a closer look for changes in breast tissue that cannot be felt during a breast exam. I hope that this month, every woman who is 40 years of age and older will take the time to make an appointment for a mammogram.
If you would like more information or would like to locate an accredited mammography facility nearby, call the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program at 800-877-8077, or visit their Web site at www.adelphi.edu/nysbreastcancer. Callers can get emotional support from the hotline’s specially-trained volunteers, most of whom are women who have had breast cancer.
As always, if you have questions or comments about this or any state issue, please contact me at either my Johnstown office at (518) 762-6486, or Herkimer office at (315) 866-1632.
