While the holidays are a joyful time of the year for many, for some the season can highlight the stresses and sadness surrounding economic strains, loneliness and loss. However, during the bleak months of winter, I am uplifted most by the ways this season inspires us to share our joys and blessings with our neighbors.
Serving others is at the root of the true meaning of the holidays, and often giving of ourselves is the most rewarding part of the season. It is true that there are many financial needs in our state, and since the economic downturn this could not be more apparent. For example, if you are able, donate food to your local food pantry, purchase a gift for a child in need or make a financial contribution to a local charity.
For every financial need there are as many emotional and social needs that can be easily met with simple acts of kindness. Help serve a meal at your community’s soup kitchen, write to a recovering soldier, or take a moment to visit with those who are housebound. Your thoughtful actions will brighten the season for someone in need.
My wife and I prefer to use the money we would have spent on holiday cards to make donations to charitable organizations throughout the area. This year we chose to support the Herkimer County Hunger Coalition (315-866-7765 or 315-866-9016), the Fulmont Community Action Agency in Fulton County (518-853-3011) and Opportunities for Otsego (607-433-8000). These are just a few of the many organizations looking for your help.
If you are seeking ways to contribute to your community, call your county’s social services department, local places of worship or charitable organizations. Each will be able to direct you in ways that your actions can help others.
I hope each of you will consider the ways you can make a positive impact in your neighborhoods now and throughout the year. I wish you happiness and the best of what the holiday season has to offer.
