“I am deeply disappointed that the administration has chosen to close the Tryon Girls Facility in Fulton County. We have had – and continue to have -- differing opinions with the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) about the effectiveness of programs at both Tryon Boys and Girls, but it appeared from the outset that OCFS was determined to close the Girls side as it had already done to the Boys side.
“Though this announcement did not catch us totally by surprise, it is, nonetheless, bitter news for a community that continues to struggle with its economy. As with the Boys side closure, I continue to question whether this is a ‘downsizing’ or a shift of positions and jobs from one area of the state to another. Certainly, these girls will continue to require supervision and services wherever they ultimately are placed.
“It has been a difficult period for this community and the Tryon employees as the state has reviewed Tryon’s operations. I certainly sympathize with the many employees who worked so diligently at Tryon for so many years, often under stressful conditions.
“As we move forward, the governor and Legislature have placed $50 million in economic development funding in the state budget to assist communities affected by prison closures. I will work with local and state officials to secure a portion of that funding to help in our efforts to create new job opportunities in Fulton County and the Mohawk Valley that will replace those lost at Tryon.”
