"Throughout their history have been able to maintain their culture, their language, their religion and society stayed together despite the challenges. This is a group of people in their history who have never been colonized, they have dispersed but remained true to their heritage and who they are. They have made an incredible mark in our communities.  They are a significant and growing population in the borough of the Bronx. And we have seen their contributions time and time again, they're a beautiful culture, a beautiful group of people, who give so much back and I'm grateful that we have developed the relationship that we have," said Assemblymember Marcos Cespo while on the resolution to declare March 11, 2018 to April 12, 2018 as Garifuna-American Heritage Month in the State of New York.
