Chair, Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development Committee
Dear Friends:
Welcome to my website. It is my great honor to represent the people of the 30th District of Queens in the New York State Assembly, including the neighborhoods of Maspeth and Woodside plus parts of Long Island City, Middle Village, Astoria and Sunnyside.
As a life-long resident of Maspeth and a mother who has worked for nearly 30 years to improve the quality of life in Queens, I am proud to continue the community service I began as a neighborhood activist, continued as a volunteer member of my local Community Board, and now in public service.
Over my years in the New York State Assembly, I have worked to provide increased funding for education, health care and seniors as well as securing millions of dollars for important Queens cultural institutions and community organizations in the 30th District that provide vital services to youth, seniors and small businesses.
My legislation signed into law over the years has resulted in tougher standards on farms and in the food industry to ensure the safety of food in our supermarkets. As Chair of the Sub-Committee on Child Product Safety, I called attention to dangerous toys on the market and passed a law that banned the sale of box cutters to minors. Currently, my highest priority is enactment of the New York Child Victims Act, a bill to extend the criminal and civil statute of limitations for child sexual abuse crimes and give victims additional time to report the wrongs done against them. You will find more information on this site about the Child Victims Act and why it is so important that it become law.
I came to the Assembly in 1998 after working in local government at Queens Borough Hall where I created the first tourism program for the borough. That is why I am now particularly pleased to be Chair of the Assembly Committee on Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development. I am also a member of the Assembly Committees on Agriculture, Consumer Affairs & Protection, Government Operations, Labor and Racing & Wagering.
Come back again to read more news about my activities and the New York State Assembly and please call or email my office if we can help with a community problem or issue.
Sincerely,
Margaret M. Markey
