It is a great pleasure to join with Queens Borough Library Director Tom Galante and his staff to celebrate the re-opening of the Astoria Branch Library. All of us are delighted to see the fine work that has prepared this branch to serve new generations of Astoria residents.
It is an honor for me and my Assembly colleagues to have provided $2 million in support for the Queens Library this year, and I am pleased to have also provided funding for furniture and equipment in the Children’s Room here.
A library is the heart and soul of a community and in these challenging economic times for our city and state, it also provides vital resources and services to help adults and children expand their knowledge and improve their lives.
Seeing this sparkling modernized branch and being aware of all the library activities and programs here and throughout the borough, it is no surprise to any of us that the Queens Library was recently named the American “Library of the Year” for 2009.
The people of Queens are fortunate to have such a marvelous library system and my colleagues in government and I are proud to work with Tom Galante and his outstanding staff to make it even stronger.
