Swine Flu Statement by Assemblywoman Margaret Markey
May 18, 2010
Parents are rightly concerned about this threat to our children and those who work to educate them. As we have seen with the tragic death of a Queens educator over the weekend, this virus can be deadly. Careful monitoring of daily attendance and in-school reports of illness must be followed by swift action to cut off the spread of this epidemic. It is also critical that the Department of Education and the Health Department provide parents and all those who work in the schools with information on how to identify and quickly deal with symptoms of potential illness as they arise. When schools are closed, it is critical that education and health officials follow up with parents of students from those affected schools. Information about this threat to public health and how to treat it is vital.
