Assemblymember Cusick: Storm Relief Rebate Program Offers Aid to New Yorkers

September 19, 2011
The clean up and rebuilding efforts across New York State in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene and Tropical Storm Lee are expected to take months of hard work. As your state Assembly representative, I know the difficulties Staten Island faces as the recovery process continues. To help alleviate some of the financial burden that affected New Yorkers are now facing, the state has launched the Storm Relief Rebate grant program. This initiative will help those who sustained property damage as a result of Tropical Storm Irene and Tropical Storm Lee replace household appliances and equipment.

The program, funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), will allow New York residents to qualify for the following cash rebates when purchasing eligible ENERGY STAR® or High Efficiency household appliances and equipment:

  • $2,500 for a boiler;
  • $2,000 for a furnace;
  • $400 for qualifying hot water heaters;
  • Up to $350 for refrigerators;
  • $250 for clothes washers and dryers; and
  • $100 for a dehumidifier.

Storm relief rebate applications are now available. Those interested can fill out applications online or over the phone. In order to qualify, applicants must confirm that the appliances are being replaced as a direct result of the recent storms. They must also confirm that the necessary items are not covered by homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, or by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) relief efforts.

To qualify for the rebate, purchases must be made on or after Aug. 29, 2011 for residents affected by Tropical Storm Irene, and for residents affected by Tropical Storm Lee, purchases must be made on or after Sept. 9, 2011. A maximum of one rebate per appliance type is allowed per installation address. Additional rebates may be available from NYSERDA, manufacturers or your local utility offices. Funds will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

If your family is dealing with the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene or Tropical Storm Lee, I urge you to look into this Storm Relief Rebate program. Recovery may be a long road, but programs like these go a long way in aiding the process.
