Assemblyman Cusick and Senator Savino Call on Port Authority to Review Toll Hike Distribution

August 9, 2011

STATEN ISLAND – Assemblyman Michael Cusick (D-Mid Island) and Senator Diane Savino (D-North Shore, Brooklyn) sent a letter to Port Authority Executive Director Christopher Ward calling for the bi-state agency to review the way the toll hikes are being distributed and to protect Staten Island residents.

Residents of Staten Island often have no choice but to cross these bridges to go about their everyday lives. Increasing tolls at such a significant rate would be another burden on Staten Island families already feeling strains of a fragile economy.

“We respect and are in support of the Port Authority’s objective to improve infrastructure in the region. We think they need to take a look at how the burden is being spread.” said Cusick. “There are a number of great projects that the Port Authority has in the works, including the rebuilding of the Goethals Bridge, improvements to the Bayonne Bridge, and a light rail link to Staten Island. We look forward to opening a dialogue on how the Port Authority can develop a more feasible structure to fund all of its projects.”
