Assemblyman Michael Cusick (D-Mid-Island) is announcing today a bill (A.6647-A) he authored, which would prohibit U turns in school zones, has been signed into law by the Governor. The law, Chapter 249, goes into effect November 1, 2013 and it is state-wide. This legislation originated from discussions with the Community Education Council 31 and was introduced at their request. Joining the Assemblyman will be members of Community Education Council 31.

“This legislation will help to ensure that school zones remain safe for students by providing more predictable traffic patterns. U turns will be prohibited anywhere a school sign is currently located whether it is a sign stating you are approaching a school area, a school crossing or a school related activity adjacent to the roadway,” said Assemblyman Cusick.

“Keeping New York’s school children safe is a top priority and this legislation will create a safer environment for them during the school day. It is one more step to keep them out of danger from motorists in school zones,” concluded Cusick.

The bill is sponsored in the Senate by Senator Charles Fuschillo, Jr. (S.3528-A).
