State Budget Agreement Reached to Eliminate ‘Nuisance Taxes’

March 11, 2009
Great Neck – Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel is pleased to announce that the Assembly has reached an agreement with the Governor and Senate to reject a series of taxes that would have posed significant hardships for low-income and middle-class families struggling to make ends meet in the current economic recession.

“I heard from hundreds of constituents about their opposition to the proposed taxes on soft drinks, health clubs, movie tickets among others, and my colleagues and I acted. The Assembly will not close this budget deficit by overburdening the lifestyles of hardworking families,” said Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel.

The proposed taxes rejected by the budget agreement include:

  • Cable and satellite television
  • Health club
  • Soda and soft drinks
  • Digital downloads
  • Entertainment (movie tickets, bowling and golf)
  • Capital improvement tax

  • Clothing and footwear under $110
  • Store coupons
