Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel to Speak On Gun Control in Albany and Great Neck
February 25, 2013

Great Neck, New York – A leader on anti-crime initiatives in the New York State Legislature, Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel will be a featured speaker on the topic of gun control at Albany Law School Government Law Center’s prestigious Warren M. Anderson Legislative Breakfast and at Temple Beth-El of Great Neck.

Following the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, Assemblywoman Schimel, Co-Chair of the New York Chapter of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns (SLAIG), worked to assemble a broad coalition of support among state legislators for an eight-point plan to reduce gun violence. Many of these measures were included in the NY SAFE Act, which was recently signed into law and has been hailed as one of the toughest gun safety laws in the country.

On February 26th, Assemblywoman Schimel will be a featured panelist at the Anderson Legislative Breakfast. Schimel will discuss the NY SAFE Act, her microstamping legislation, and the effort to reduce gun violence at the federal level. Fellow panelists include, Professor Dan Feldman of John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Assemblyman Steven McLaughlin.

Residents will have the opportunity to hear Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel speak about gun control. She will be speaking on the subject at Temple Beth-El of Great Neck’s Erev Shabbat Service on Friday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m. The Temple is located at 5 Old Mill Road in Great Neck.

Schimel, who is the sponsor of microstamping legislation, has spoken on the issue on CNN’s Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien. Her article, “Microstamping Guns: A Tool to Help Solve Gun Crimes in New York,” was published in the Summer 2012 Issue of the New York State Bar Association’s Government, Law and Policy Journal. For close to twenty years, the Assemblywoman served on the Board of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, the largest citizens’ group in the state dedicated to reducing gun-related violence.
