Assemblywoman Schimel’s Bill Honoring Fallen Police Officer Signed Into Law
August 2, 2013
Great Neck, New York – Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill (A. 6822-A) into law sponsored by Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, designating the New Hyde Park Road overpass as the “Police Officer Joseph P. Olivieri, Jr. Memorial Bridge.”
In October 2012, Police Officer Olivieri, a 15 year veteran of the Nassau County Police Department, was struck and killed by a motorist while investigating a traffic accident on the L.I.E. involving a drunk driver. He is survived by two children.
“Designating the New Hyde Park Road overpass in honor of Police Officer Joseph P. Olivieri, Jr. is but a small token of appreciation to Police Officer Olivieri and his family for the ultimate sacrifice he made on behalf of our community,” said Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel.
Earlier this year, Olivieri was one of sixteen fallen police officers honored by the Governor at the Police Officers’ Memorial Remembrance Ceremony in Albany.
