The final agreement includes Assemblywoman Schimel’s demands for stricter oversight of LIPA, prior approval from the state comptroller on contracts over $50,000, and requires the service provider to semi-annually post contracts of over $250,000 online. Schimel also worked to insure that LIPA would continue its sustainability and alternative energy programs.
“For too long, LIPA has delivered sub-par service that has left families shivering in the dark following emergencies and weather events. This new law will stabilize electric rates, improve emergency and storm response, and provide LIPA customers with the quality service they deserve,” said Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel.
At the bill signing ceremony, Governor Andrew Cuomo stated, “LIPA has offered lackluster service for too long and after its failure to perform during Superstorm Sandy it was clear we needed a change. With today’s bill signing, ratepayers on Long Island are getting a utility whose operations will be run by PSEG with its award winning record of performance during disasters.”
The law turns over day-to-day operations to PSEG, the service provider, will improve customer service, strengthen oversight, and refinance LIPA’s higher interest debt.
