Rozic Sponsors Housing Workshop

Helps Local Residents Interested in Affordable, Public Housing

Queens, NY – Today, Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D,WF-Flushing) hosted a public housing workshop at Selfhelp Rosenthal Senior Center in Flushing with representatives available to assist local residents with their applications. The workshop was held in conjunction with Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-Queens), State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing), Assemblyman Ron Kim (D-Flushing), and Council Member Peter Koo (D-Flushing).

“Making city and state agencies more accessible to Queens residents has always been my priority. By bringing NYCHA to Flushing, we were able to address the needs of those who have expressed interest in learning more about affordable housing and opportunities to apply,” said Assemblywoman Rozic.

The process for public housing begins with the applicant submitting an application online or in person at one of the Customer Contact Centers located throughout New York City. To better serve Queens residents, NYCHA representatives answered questions for first-time applicants and those who already had applications on file.

Apartment availability varies by borough and waiting lists are typically longer for Queens. NYCHA urges applicants to keep their information up to date as eligibility interviews are dependent on borough choice, apartment size, housing priority, and the application date.

“I’m happy to join my colleagues in presenting this important workshop,” said Congresswoman Grace Meng. “Hopefully, those attending will find answers to their questions, and learn all they need to know about affordable housing and the application process.”

“Unfortunately, navigating NYCHA has always been a difficult and complicated process, especially for those for whom English is not their primary language. That is why I’m proud to join my fellow Flushing legislators to host this workshop. By making this information directly available to the public, I hope we can make this process less confusing, less frustrating and more transparent for our constituents,” said Senator Toby Ann Stavisky.

“Housing is one of the biggest issues in our community and addressing those needs is important. Over half of the constituents that come to my office seeking help are looking for some kind of housing or living assistance. I am happy Assemblywoman Rozic is hosting this housing workshop and look forward to our continued partnership to provide our communities with the resources and services that they need,” said Assemblyman Kim.

“Connecting our constituents with government agencies that provide essential services is an important part of our jobs as elected officials,” said Council Member Koo. “There is a great need for affordable housing in this area, particularly for our elderly population. I am proud to work with Assemblywoman Rozic and the rest of my colleagues to promote awareness and transparency in the application process.”

“This past year, NYCHA has been working on ways to become a more efficient customer focused agency. We have introduced electronic processing and additional online self-service tools so that both our public housing and Section 8 residents can apply for housing, access their application status and update information and appointments, among other features,” said a representative from NYCHA.
