Assemblyman Lopez Responds To Governor Spitzer’s “No State Income Tax On Federal Rebate” Announcement
February 21, 2008
“Governor Spitzer’s announcement that the federal rebate checks, recently approved by Congress as part of the President’s economic stimulus package, would be exempt from New York State income tax comes as good news to New Yorkers. In fact, Congress specifically exempted these rebate checks from state taxation as protection for taxpayers in states which would look to gain a financial windfall by imposing a state tax to capture additional revenue.
With that said, my colleagues and I are calling for the governor to fully fund the promised STAR rebates, which he cut in his recent budget proposal. I am calling on the governor to exempt STAR rebate checks from state income tax so that taxpayers can see real relief from skyrocketing property taxes, which are driving families and businesses out of New York.”
