Assemblyman Pete Lopez welcomes Saugerties High School senior Brooke Littlefield to the Assembly Chamber as part of the League of Women Voters’ annual “Students Inside Albany” leadership program held this week in Albany.
“The League of Women Voters’ program is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain hands-on perspective into their state government. It was a pleasure to welcome Brooke, and I hope this opportunity helped highlight the importance of civic participation and public service to her,” said Assemblyman Lopez.
Ms. Littlefield commented on her experience, “To be honest, it was one of the most memorable and interesting experiences of my life. I did not really know what to expect coming into this shadowing experience, but Mr. Lopez was very welcoming and gave me a complete inside look at the daily routine and responsibilities of an assembly member.”
She continued, “I had no idea how busy the members were and I now have an even greater respect for all that they do. As Mr. Lopez explained his busy schedule to me, I was greatly impressed at how involved he was with the events of his constituents. He had mentioned that he had been traveling all weekend, from event to event, and on top of that he made sure that he made time to be with his family. Mr. Lopez had told me that he was not required to travel all over for his constituents or push for new changes of government, but he wanted to make a difference and help the people he represents. I deeply admire his theories and he inspired me to try to make a difference in the world I live in as well. I greatly appreciated his time and I definitely look forward to seeing the changes that assembly member Peter Lopez will bring about in the future.”
After graduating from Saugerties High School this spring, Ms. Littlefield plans to attend Pennsylvania State University and to major in biology, with emphasis on pre-med. Currently, she is the secretary on the Saugerties High School Council and Key Club and plays softball and volleyball. Outside of school, Ms. Littlefield is part of a competition dance team and works part-time as a KVP monitor technician. During the summers, she enjoys water sports, dance camp and attending leadership conferences, and has previously attended programs including Empire Girls State, People to People leadership Conference at Columbia University and a National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine at Villanova University.
