Goldfeder calls on Department of Transportation to step up their efforts and investigate all hazardous streets near public schools in Howard Beach, Lindenwood, and Ozone Park
Ozone Park, Queens – In an effort to create safer roadways and protect students attending Elizabeth Blackwell Middle School, MS 210Q, Assemblyman Phillip Goldfeder (D-Ozone Park) has reached out to the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) requesting an immediate investigation of the dangerous traffic congestion located at 93rd Street, between 101st Avenue and 97th Avenue.
“I have personally visited the area and I am concerned by the significant lack of traffic control devices to protect students crossing the street to and from school,” said Assemblyman Goldfeder. “The current situation is unacceptable and is putting our families and children’s lives at risk.”
To avoid a likely accident, faculty members must escort students daily across the busy intersection at the Elizabeth Blackwell Middle School during student dismissal and arrival times, Goldfeder noted.
“The school administration has appealed to the DOT over the years to address this issue without any consistent remedy, said Principal Rosalyn Allman-Manning. “Unacceptable behaviors of adults getting out of their cars to argue and fight, places everyone in danger. Our students observed this very behavior from adults who are supposed to set examples in conflict resolution and problem solving.”
“This is a recurring problem not just for MS210Q, but for many of our public schools in Howard Beach, Lindenwood, and Ozone Park,” said Assemblyman Goldfeder. “I demand the Department of Transportation take steps immediately to prevent a tragic accident before it’s too late.”
Last year, Assemblyman Goldfeder sent a letter to DOT requesting a thorough investigation of all roadways surrounding schools at Walter Ward Public School 232 in Lindenwood, Rockwood Park Public School 207 in Howard Beach, and the Old South School Public School 63 in Ozone Park.
“School officials, parents and community leaders have been fighting for safer streets for too long and should not have to wait for a tragic incident to get results. I urge the Department of Transportation to take every action necessary to keep our children safe,” said Assemblyman Goldfeder.
