The legislative package passed today by the state legislature featured both positive and negative provisions, but most importantly, this bill will leave New Yorkers paying less in taxes this year than they did last year. For the people of Western New York, that’s a gift horse we can’t look in the mouth.
The problem with this measure, however, is that it misses the point of why New York is facing a budget gap in the first place. We simply cannot afford the programs and services we provide. By increasing tax revenues, we are ignoring the fact that until we rein in spending, state government will be looking for a budget quick-fix this time every year. While I supported this legislation because it protects the money that Western New York’s families and businesses have earned, the legislature still has a long way to go if we are going to solve the problems that have bankrupted this state for years.
