Assemblyman Robert Sweeney (D-Lindenhurst) has announced the passage in the New York State Assembly of legislation he sponsored to improve local government efficiency and lower costs.
This bill would require a written response to audits performed by the State Comptroller’s Office. Currently, over a third of the local government entities audited by the Comptroller do not respond to the findings and recommendations in the audit.
This proposal would ensure that audit recommendations are not ignored by requiring a written response from the local governing board. This provides more information and accountability to taxpayers.
Audits and examinations are critical to ensuring good performance. When inefficiencies or waste are identified it is critical that changes and procedures be changed to get the maximum value out of every dollar spent.
“In these tight economic times it is more important than ever for governments to be efficient, effective and transparent. This legislation will help move us towards this goal” said Assemblyman Sweeney.
The bill is sponsored in the New York State Senate by Senator Mark Grisanti (R- Buffalo).
