Schimminger Appoints N.T. Student to Maritime College
Assemblyman Robin Schimminger is shown presenting Kevin Smith, a senior at North Tonawanda High School, with a cadet appointment to the State University of New York Maritime College. His mother, Catherine Smith, looked on as Kevin received a certificate and a "stars and bars" box to commemorate the appointment, one of the first appointments made under the state’s new Cadet Appointment Program. Kevin will receive a four-year, tuition scholarship to SUNY Maritime, the oldest and most prestigious maritime college in the nation. With a curriculum that emphasizes engineering, science and the humanities, the program blends academics and regimental education. Upon graduation, cadets earn licenses as officers in the U.S. Merchant Marine as well as their degrees and are eligible for a Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, National Guard, Coast Guard or Oceanography and Atmospheric Administration Commission.
