High school students considering which college to attend and how to pay for it should be aware of a new opportunity, Assemblyman Robin Schimminger said today. “We in the New York State Legislature this year approved a new Cadet Appointment Program at the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College that allows members of the Legislature to nominate students to attend the college as part of its prestigious Regiment of Cadets with four-year, full-tuition scholarships,” Schimminger explained. “Each member of the State Assembly can nominate one cadet, and I intend to help a young person in my district take advantage of that opportunity beginning with the upcoming 2003-04 school year.”
The Maritime College, which is located where the East River meets the Long Island Sound in New York City, is the oldest maritime school in the nation and boasts a 100 percent career placement rate. While pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering, business or science, cadets also prepare for licensure as ship officers (3rd Mate or 3rd Assistant Engineer) in the U.S. Merchant Marine. Although no military service is required upon graduation, a variety of voluntary ROTC options are available to interested cadets. The College’s curriculum blends classroom instruction with three summers of international travel aboard the America’s best-equipped training vessel, Empire State VI, and graduates are well-equipped with the leadership and teamwork skills necessary to succeed as citizens of the world – on land and at sea.
“Students who live in the 140th Assembly District (Kenmore, the Town and City of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda) and are interested in applying to SUNY Maritime College and seeking a legislative nomination may contact my office for an application,” said Assemblyman Schimminger, whose office may be reached at 873-2540. Completed applications must be postmarked by February 1, 2003. Students seeking a legislative nomination should have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and community service experience.
