Assembly Majority Leader Ron Canestrari (D-Cohoes) is encouraging local teens to create videos for entry into the national Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) “2012 Teen Video Challenge.” One winning video, submitted by a teen or group of teens, will be chosen as the New York State winner and will receive $275, plus $150 will be awarded to the teen’s local library. Winning videos from each state will be used as official 2012 CSLP promotional videos and will be shown nationwide.
“Our annual Summer Reading Program is a great way for parents to spend time with their kids, while simultaneously preparing them for the school year ahead,” said Canestrari. “This video challenge adds a creative, positive activity for teens during the winter months.”
The Summer Reading Program is an annual program that promotes increased literacy by keeping children, teens and their families involved in reading and other library-centered activities throughout the summer months. In 2011, more than 1.6 million young New Yorkers participated in the program at roughly 1,100 libraries across the state.i
New York State residents between the ages of 13 and 18 are eligible to enter the CSLP challenge either individually or in groups. Videos must be between 30 and 90 seconds and should focus on encouraging other teens to read and utilize their local libraries this summer. Entries will be judged on creativity, clarity, relevance, motivation, inspiration and overall impact. Submissions must be received by March 5, 2012, and should feature an interpretation of this year’s CSLP teen slogan, “Own the Night.” For more information, including entry forms and submission guidelines, please visit www.summerreadingnys.org.
“By entering a video into the CSLP ‘Teen Video Challenge,’ teens help foster a love of reading amongst their peers, while giving themselves the chance to win a little extra spending money, give back to their local library and have their work viewed by a national audience,” said Canestrari.
