Assemblywoman Galef Tapped to Chair Real Property Taxation Committee

January 27, 2006

Assemblywoman Sandy Galef (90th AD) was appointed Chair of the NYS Assembly Real Property Taxation Committee by the Speaker of the Assembly yesterday.

Galef eagerly accepts this new position, citing her desire to work on important taxation issues that affect the residents of New York State. “I welcome this new challenge,” Galef said, “I will advocate for policies of equality and tax fairness in our state.”

The Real Property Taxation Committee deals with myriad tax issues, including the taxation of property, the STAR program, school tax stabilization programs, partial payment of taxes, equalization rates, reassessment of property, and caps on assessments.

Galef expressed a particular interest in issues related to school taxation, saying, “The way we fund our schools has a direct impact on the quality of education that the children of New York State receive. We must look at all options available when determining how we fund our schools, to decide the most just, equitable, and appropriate tax solution.

Galef concluded, “I am looking forward to this new opportunity to serve the taxpayers of New York State, and to ensure that we have fair and sound real property tax legislation in our state.
