“Speak Out” with Assemblywoman Sandy Galef Focuses on Local Consolidation

Panelists discuss how public participation can make a difference
April 19, 2010

Assemblywoman Sandy Galef recently hosted a forum on local consolidation and how New York has made consolidation of schools and local governments possible. The forum featured three distinguished guests, John Clarkson, Executive Director of the New York State Commission on Local Government Efficiency and Competitiveness, Dr. James Malatras, from the New York State Attorney General’s Office, and Dr. Deborah Cunningham, from the New York State Education Department.

All three guests emphasized the need for local discussion in deciding what is right for their own community and how public participation can make a difference. Clarkson spoke about his work with the Commission, and how local governments could be modified to become more efficient. Malatras discussed new legislation which was passed by the New York State Legislature last year making it easier for people to start initiatives to consolidate or dissolve their local municipalities. Cunningham talked about how school districts can reorganize.

“I think it is so important for community members to understand the process of consolidating local governments and school districts. We really need everyone’s participation if we are to move forward,” said Galef. “If our community members become involved in local discussions then we can better decide what is right for each community, which can hopefully lead to greater efficiencies and lower taxes. I encourage anyone who wasn’t able to make it to this forum to watch it on TV.”
