Assemblywoman Sandy Galef hosts George Klein and Susan Leifer of the Sierra Club and Suzannah Glidden of the Croton Watershed Clean Water Coalition, Inc. on her television show, “Dear Sandy.” Galef, Klein, Leifer and Glidden discuss hydraulic fracturing (also known as hydrofracking) and its long-term effect on the environment.

Hydrofracking involves putting chemicals into the ground to extract natural gas and has been proposed in upstate New York along the Marcellus Shale. The guests go into detail about the hydrofracking process and its impact on the Croton Watershed which provides drinking water for New York City and its environs, as well as other potential negative environmental consequences. In addition, they discuss the temporary moratorium which the New York legislature has passed and what state and federal environmental agencies are studying with regards to the safety of hydrofracking.

“The issue of hydrofracking and whether it should be permitted in New York has been widely discussed in recent months by New Yorkers, environmental advocates, and government officials,” said Galef. “I am thankful that George, Susan and Suzannah were able to join me for a discussion on this topic to allow my constituents to understand this complex issue.”
