Assemblywoman Galef Discusses the US Census on “Dear Sandy”

April 30, 2010
Assemblywoman Galef hosts Nancy Huehnergarth, Director of NY State Healthy Eating & Physical Activity Alliance (NYSHEPA) on her television show “Dear Sandy”. NYSHEPA works with school districts and policy groups to help advocate positive decisions that will help children eat healthier and live healthier lifestyles.

Huehnergarth describes her efforts to work with schools and day care centers to create new guidelines that will focus on healthier meals and snacks and more physical activity. NYSHEPA has also worked with local and state government to implement healthy changes for all people. These changes include calorie count menu labeling at the Westchester County level, and working with local municipalities to make them more walkable by improving their sidewalks, constructing bike lanes and creating safer street crossing zones. Huehnergarth stresses that it is important to be good role models so that our children can grow up making healthy and smarter food and physical activity choices.

“It is important that parents, schools and governments within New York are aware that healthier choices need to be made at all levels to positively effect our children’s health as well as our own health,” Galef said. “We are responsible for the well being of future generations, and we need to start by changing our own food and physical activity choices. I enjoyed my discussion with Nancy and know that NYSHEPA is working very hard to positively impact our lives.”
