Assemblywoman Sandy Galef Talks With Beverly Neufeld and Assemblywoman Amy Paulin on “Dear Sandy”

It’s about time for women’s equality
November 13, 2014

Assemblywoman Galef is joined by colleague Assembly Member Amy Paulin and Activist Beverly Neufeld to discuss what is next for women’s equality legislation on her TV show “Speak Out with Sandy Galef.”

Assemblywoman Sandy Galef speaks with Beverly Cooper Neufeld, Director of the Equal Pay Coalition of NYC and NYS PowHer and Assemblywoman Amy Paulin about the importance of taking action to gain equality for women in the workforce, as well as protecting them.

Neufeld reminds viewers about the fact that a woman makes 77 cents for every dollar a man makes, specifically for white women, and for women of color, it is even lower. Assemblywoman Paulin describes the importance of passing the Human Trafficking Bill that was introduced in 2011; the bill would increase penalties for traffickers of young women. Paulin mentions that there are many young women from Westchester County and New York City who are victims of human trafficking and in fact this is an issue that is happening right under our noses. Neufeld believes that the passing of bills like the Women’s Equality Act, specifically the part dealing with pay equity for women, will benefit everyone. She argues that by closing the wage gap, it will benefit the economic health of families and at the same time our state’s economy.

“It is vital that we understand the importance of taking action so that our state can move forward with these crucial protections for women,” said Assemblywoman Sandy Galef. “We need to protect vulnerable young women and fight for equal pay for now and for all future generations.”
